Ever wanted to dedicate yourself to improving as much as possible? I have. So I set out on a year of personal development to see just how much I could grow.

This is my journey.

Episode 19 of the 2018 Experiment

My wife had another miscarriage, which makes 2 this year (2 in a row) and it sent our family reeling.

I’m trying to focus on art, now, and I’m supporting my wife in her journey to better herself, as well.

Last Week’s Plan:
* Stick to my daily yoga. (Pseudo-successful)
* Pivot a bit in my marketing efforts. (Success)
* Build my front porch! (Near success. One more section left)

This Week’s Plan:
* Establish strong family routines around our goals.
* DRAW until my fingers bleed.
* Write daily.

Episode 18 of the 2018 Experiment

Well, the boy child decided that sleeping wasn’t for him, which threw a bit of a wrench into my family’s daily lives.

I had to switch from reading my book o’ the week to reading The Sleepeasy Solution – which was an amazing piece of literature that saved our family from a sleep-deprived car crash (possibly).

Last Week’s Plan:
* Keep on marketing like a madman. (Success!)
* Update JoshuaGraphic.com – focusing on the book list. (Success!)
* Get back to daily yoga with my wife. (Epic fail!)

This Week’s Plan:
* Stick to my daily yoga.
* Pivot a bit in my marketing efforts.
* Build my front porch!

Episode 17 of the 2018 Experiment

A summer cold kicked my ass right after my family vacation. Then the in-laws came to visit. And I’ve been tattooing a lot. It’s been craziness!

Last Week’s Plans….probably didn’t happen.

This Week’s Plan:
* Keep on marketing like a madman.
* Update JoshuaGraphic.com – focusing on the book list.
* Get back to daily yoga with my wife.

Whew. It’s good to be back.

Episode 16 of the 2018 Experiment

It was a slow week at the shop for me, and I’ve been busy with unexpected projects that slowed down my marketing efforts. But this week I’m going on vacation, which gives me the opportunity (and motivation) to refocus and get the important things done.

Last Week’s Plan:
* Set up local marketing for myself with Facebook, Google, and a new site. (Success)
* Re-evaluate my commitments and goals. Narrow my focus and set SMART goals. (Completed)
* Break my son from his pacifier. Fun fun. (FAIL LoL)

This Week’s Plan:
* Set numbers for my marketing goals and try to meet them. What results do I want?
* Break the Paci…damn that paci.
* Finish client drawings – and post ’em for the exposure!

Episode 15 of the 2018 Experiment

I got a neck tattoo. It was very, very painful. And I made a lot of progress on my goals and projects last week. Unfortunately, these projects aren’t complete.

Last Week’s Plan (This Week’s Plan, too):

  • Set up local marketing for myself with Facebook, Google, and a new site.
  • Re-evaluate my commitments and goals. Narrow my focus and set SMART goals.
  • Break my son from his pacifier. Fun fun.

I made progress but didn’t complete any of these goals. So…this week’s plan is the same as last week’s.

Episode 14 of the 2018 Experiment

Yard work nearly got the best of me, but I’m still kicking and I had a really good week. I’m starting to take control of my personal brand, which is a huge project.

Last Week’s Plan:

  • Re-develop my reading habit – 30 minutes per day. (Success)
  • Get my yard cleaned up and prepare to do yard work (Definitely went above and beyond on this one)
  • Systemize and create checklists for as many things as possible. (I have a great start here)
  • Set SMART Goals, especially around marketing my tattoos. (Nope, but that’s on the list of projects for this week)

This Week’s Plan:

  • Set up local marketing for myself with Facebook, Google, and a new site.
  • Re-evaluate my commitments and goals. Narrow my focus and set SMART goals.
  • Break my son from his pacifier. Fun fun.

Episode 13 of the 2018 Experiment

Friday the 13th was absolutely INSANE at Homesick Tattoo Company, but I pulled an awesome week off.

Last Week’s Plan:

  • Meditate at least 10 minutes every day. (Success)
  • Replace coffee with Green Tea (Except for Friday.)
  • Start streamlining (Success, going to Goodwill today!)
  • Exercise with my wife (Success)
  • Finish an article (Indeed, I did – http://www.joshuagraphic.com/selfish-and-selfless/)
  • Survive Friday the 13th. (Barely, but I managed)
  • Do a live video to see what kind of response it gets. (I did numerous live videos and they were all well-received.)

Next Week’s Plan (Less is More):

  • Re-develop my reading habit – 30 minutes per day.
  • Get my yard cleaned up and prepare to do yard work
  • Systemize and create checklists for as many things as possible.
  • Set SMART Goals, especially around marketing my tattoos.

Episode 12 of the 2018 Experiment

I almost forgot to do my quarterly review! I’m glad I didn’t. When I sat down to review the last 90-ish days I was surprised to see how far I’d drifted from my real goals and the purpose of the 2018 Experiment.

Last Week’s Plan:

  • Promote tattooing some more. (Yep)
  • Investigate other income streams. (Not so much, I focused on getting my review done)
  • Study, study, study. (Yes, indeed)
  • Put out good work. (Success!)

This Week’s Plan:

  • Meditate at least 10 minutes every day.
  • Replace coffee with Green Tea
  • Start streamlining
  • Exercise with my wife
  • Finish an article
  • Survive Friday the 13th.
  • Do a live video to see what kind of response it gets.

Wow, that’s a LOT of stuff for a week. Luckily, most of it is small habit changes. I can do this.

Episode 11 of the 2018 Experiment

I traded my office to my son and got his nursery. And my business plan is a no-go (for now).

Last Week’s Plan:

  • Skim 12 Rules to finish it. (Finished. No comments on it yet)
  • Tattoo a lot. (Success!)
  • Make quality family time a priority. (The in-laws visited, so that was a win)
  • Study my Marketing Course. (Too busy to study. Unfortunately)
  • Tattoo some more. (Yup.)

This Week’s Plan:

  • Promote tattooing some more.
  • Investigate other income streams.
  • Study, study, study.
  • Put out good work.

Episode 10 of the 2018 Experiment

Not a bad week. I made a bit of progress on 12 Rules, but it’s getting a bit dense with Christian ideology. I had a moral dilemna that I think I handled well, and I preserved my reputation as a tattoo artist.

Also, there are some photos of my art in this video (I’m back to lettering!)

Last Week’s Plan:

  • Get feedback on my business plan and polish it based on said feedback. (Didn’t do this… sadface)
  • Focus on building a loyal clientele. (Going well)
  • Get enough sleep and nail my rituals daily. (Depends on the day…)
  • Plug away at 12 Rules for Life (Getting too “preachy”)

This Week’s Plan:

  • Skim 12 Rules to finish it.
  • Tattoo a lot.
  • Make quality family time a priority.
  • Study my Marketing Course.
  • Tattoo some more.

Episode 09 of the 2018 Experiment

It was a really good week, except for the sleep deprivation. My routines are SUPER important to me, and sleep deprivation really holds me back, so I’m glad I managed to get insomnia under control.

Oh, and I totally finished my business plan this morning!

Last Week’s Plan:

  • Continue focusing on tattooing. (Did really well)
  • Build an art portfolio around subjects that I want to tattoo. (Starting to work on large-scale pieces)
  • Work on the business plan. (Finished it!)
  • Finish the 12 Rules. (Still working on it)

This Week’s Plan:

  • Get feedback on my business plan and polish it based on said feedback.
  • Focus on building a loyal clientele.
  • Get enough sleep and nail my rituals daily.
  • Plug away at 12 Rules for Life

Episode 08 of the 2018 Experiment

I had a really great week at the tattoo shop and at home! My business plan is coming together very well, and I got a new pair of glasses. 😀

Last Week’s Plan:

  • Promote tattooing as much as possible through regularly posting art and finished tattoos on social media. (Success!)
  • Start working on a business plan for my “new business venture.” (Also a success!)
  • Film for DrawCore if I have the time (secondary goal). (I carved out a little bit of time)
  • Read 12 Rules for Life. (Half success!)

Other Awesome Things:

  • My glasses!
  • Rearranging the house.

This Week’s Plan:

  • Continue focusing on tattooing.
  • Build an art portfolio around subjects that I want to tattoo.
  • Work on the business plan.
  • Finish the 12 Rules. 🙂

Episode 07 of the 2018 Experiment

It has been a busy week of tattooing for me, I didn’t accomplish exactly what I set out to do, but other goals came into view for me.

Last Week’s Plan:

  • Draw one rose per day for tattoo flash.
  • Start promoting for St. Patty’s.
  • Film for DrawCore based on feedback of my first experiment.

None of last week’s plan got accomplished, but it was because I was consumed by tattooing as a priority. It was a busy week.

This Week’s Plan:

  • Promote tattooing as much as possible through regularly posting art and finished tattoos on social media.
  • Start working on a business plan for my “new business venture.”
  • Film for DrawCore if I have the time (secondary goal).
  • Read 12 Rules for Life.

Episode 06 of The 2018 Experiment

My family took a vacation – here’s what we learned about traveling:

  1. Plan and pack EARLY to avoid the last-minute craziness.
  2. Travel at night with toddlers. They pass out and don’t give you nearly as much of a headache.
  3. Make sleep a priority before, during, and after you travel to avoid traveler’s fatigue.

Last Week’s Plan:

  • Get my Goldilocks Sleep – Wake up at 6a. (SUCCESS!)
  • Start planning for a St. Patrick’s Day promotion. (Not so much.)
  • Get my referral engine running a bit more effectively. (Going really well)
  • A short family vacation! (I didn’t mention this in last week’s video, my bad.) (SUCCESS)

This Week’s Plan:

  • Draw one rose per day for tattoo flash.
  • Start promoting for St. Patty’s.
  • Film for DrawCore based on feedback of my first experiment.

Episode 05 of the 2018 Experiment

I’ve had a setback or two over the past week as I’ve been trying to adjust my sleep schedule to maximize family time and shop time, but my routines have suffered as a result. I’m also making the leap to full-time tattooing and I discuss my business goals a little bit.

Last Week’s Plan:

  • Try to figure out a good sleep schedule.
  • Make sure my Valentine’s Day tattoo flash was ready to go.

Next Week’s Plan:

  • Keep trying to figure out a good sleep schedule. 5 am wasn’t working, 7 am definitely isn’t working. Maybe I’ll baby bear it and go with 6 am.
  • Start planning for a St. Patrick’s Day promotion.
  • Get my referral engine running a bit more effectively.
  • A short family vacation! (I didn’t mention this in the video, my bad.)

Episode 04 of the 2018 Experiment

I’m late again! Due to a rocky “break up” with my former employer, things have been in disarray in the Johnson Household, but we’re pulling it together. Except for Maddix. He’s given me some form of contagious insomnia.

I also share some of my personal goals or the categories of my life that I’m constantly trying to improve. With those categories I share some of the projects that I’d like to complete in the next 90 days and habits that I’m trying to develop around those categories.

Episode 03 of the 2018 Experiment

In this episode, I cover my entire morning routine, what I do and why I decided to do it that way, and I discuss (briefly) some of my plans for February.

Last Week’s Plan:

  • Follow “Eliminate” phase from 4HWW. (Semi-Successful)
  • Read the Lean Startup by Eric Ries (About 50%)
  • Start learning Calligraphy and Hand Lettering (Well under-way)

Other awesome things that happened:

  • I cut down on time doing direct sales and increased time at the tattoo shop – which increased the frequency of my drawing habit.
  • I realized that I don’t consume books as quickly as I used to, and I’m OK with that because I’m taking actions instead of just consuming information.

Next Week’s Plan:

  • Finish The Lean Startup
  • Start developing an MVP for DrawCore.com
  • Test automation in different areas of my life.

If I feed my brain good things, I produce good things! I’d also love to find a good accountability partner sometime soon. 🙂

Episode 02 of the 2018 Experiment

After a rough start to 2018, things are starting to improve in my life. With enough discipline and a clear vision, anything is possible.

Last Week’s Plan:

  • Nail my routines. (Accomplished)
  • Finish setting quarterly goals. (Accomplished)
  • Finish reading the 4 Hour Work Week (Accomplished)
  • Find an accountability partner. (Didn’t accomplish, but I have people in my life who do a great job at keeping me on track.)

Other awesome things that happened:

  • I learned from my fellow tattoo artists.
  • I went above and beyond on my routines.
  • My wife and I adopted a new dog!

Next Week’s Plan:

  • Follow “Eliminate” phase from 4HWW.
  • Read the Lean Startup by Eric Ries (http://amzn.to/2BhLcUb)
  • Start learning Calligraphy and Hand Lettering

It’s great to feel like I’m back on track. I don’t know what else there is to say. I’m in a good place right now, and I’m still trying to get better. I can’t begin to describe how grateful I am to have the people I have in my life. Thank you all.

Episode 01 of the 2018 Experiment

2018 is off to a bumpy start. I mentioned in December that I’d be doing a year of documented personal development with some “floating head” videos. The first one is up a week late due to some extreme circumstances.

Let me break it down a bit:

The Plan for the first (2) week(s) of 2018

  • Read the 4 Hour Work Week and apply the principles.
  • Get all of my goals written out.
  • Make sure my routines are solid and consistent.

What Actually Happened

  • My wife and I had a miscarriage.
  • Our pipes froze and burst in our home.
  • I scrambled to hold everything together and didn’t get to focus on the things I had planned on.
  • My routines fell apart and I didn’t read anything.

The Plan for Week #3 of 2018

  • Finish reading the 4 Hour Work Week. Take notes and schedule activities based on the book’s principles.
  • Get back on track with my routines. (Doing pretty well on this, finally).
  • Finish my Quarterly Review process and have clearly defined goals for the next 90 days. (Only one item left on my review).
  • Find an accountability partner that will help keep me focused. Someone I can really grow WITH through 2018.

Episode 00 of the 2018 Experiment

In this episode I discuss my benchmark, where I’m starting out on the experiment.

Where I’m at:

  • An amazing family.
  • A comfortable home.
  • A baby on the way.
  • Around $400 in my bank account.
  • $50 in my investment account.
  • WAY too much credit card debt.

The Plan:

  • Spend January working on my routines.
  • Increase my income.
  • Dramatically reduce debt.
  • Read the 4 Hour Work Week, take notes and take action.
